KETA-ANLOGA TOURISM POTENTIAL: THE UNEXPLOITED ACRES OF DIAMOND. BY JOEL DEGUE
"No one owes us a living; we cannot live by the begging bowl." - Lee Kuan Yew.
The tourism potential of Keta-Anloga and by extension Volta Region, cannot be overemphasised. I have amply dealt with that in the first ever book written on the tourism potential of the area. Grab your copy for more information.
In this piece, I just want to delineate the Keta-Anloga tourism destination into three well distinct circuits as tourism offerings or packages. These are determined as follows:
1. The Eastern Tourism Circuit: This is made up of Main Keta town, the Fort Prinzenstein, the graves of former German Missionaries, the market scene, old buildings and churches, London Park, Royal Palaces, the Keta Sea Defence Project Site, the Afiadenyigba Salt pans, the Islands for the Migratory birds, and above all the beaches and the bays and the deep blue sea, etc.
2. The Western Circuit: This includes Woe Cape Saint Lighthouse, Torgbi Wenya Vudo, Torkor Atorlia, Agorwowornu (Anlo Traditional Supreme Court), Atorkor Slave Market, Anyanui and Anloga Market scenes, a boat cruise from Anyanui to the Volta Estuary at Ada, Bimigo Clay Deposit sites, and of course the beautiful Cape Saint Paul and the beaches, etc.
3. The Northern Circuit: This includes tourist sites and attractions at the Northern fringes of the Keta Lagon including Anyako and Seva Islands, Anlo Military Training Grounds at Tsiame, relics of Torgbui Tsali's Shrine and House, Tsali's Tree and Forest at Tsiame, Torgbi Tsali Stone at Anyako, Tsiame Township, arguably the oldest town in Anloland, the meeting point of River Nuyi and the Keta Lagoon, the grave of Henor Jeremiah Akpalu, The Memorial Park of Corporal Attipoe of the (in)famous February 28, 1948 Christianbourg crossroads shooting, the Royal Palace of Togbi Dzokoto Gligui, Fiaxor Township and the grave of the late General E.K. Kotoka of the 1966 (in)famous Coup d'état, the Avu Lagoon Ecological Complex with its West African water antelope, the Sutatunga, the flora and the fauna there, the local distillery of sugar cane into ethanol/alcohol, etc.
4. Other important attractions and activities include classes on the unique Anlo Cuisine by learning how to prepare the various local foods, local crafts like mat weaving, basket weaving, pouch weaving, local fishing with traps such as bottles (Tukpaxe), sticks and tree branches (atsidza), rope pulling (tekali), cages (exa), etc.
5. There are great opportunities too for activities such as water sports like regatta, swimming, water polo, cruising, jet skiing, surfing, angling, fishing, boating, kayaking, sun and sand bathing, long beach walking, hiking around Atiavi, Agorvinu, Mamime, Lawoshime, Agorbledokui, Blemazado, Nyikutor, Penyito, Wenyagor, Tregui, Akplorfudzi, Benadzi, etc, etc.
6. There are plans to develop Craft Village, Art Center, Museum, Photo Museum, Anlo Hall of Fame, Family Emporiums, sports stadium, athletics ovals, green spaces like parks and botanical gardens, forest reserves, protected areas, mini zoos, aquariums, bird sanctuaries, etc.
Keta-Anloga Enclave is a "tourism gold mine, acres of diamond, oil and gasfields." Most of these potentials have remained unexploited for decades and continue to miss the radar for policy makers and decision takers in charge of socioeconomic developmentof the area up to today. What a missed opportunity!
The right time has come for all these things to be brought into the limelight.
