THE ANLO-ASANTE RELATIONSHIP AND THE ANLO-GA-ADANGBE CONNECTION AT HOGBETSOTSO 2022.

The Anlo Hogbetsotso Za 2022 was historically a mighty event which saw the beautiful display of a variety of rich Ghanaian cultures and a “Kete dominated” colourful Grand Durbar.
The Durbar was graced by His Eminence the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the GA Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.

Also present was the representative of the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, and a representative of the Ewe Fiaga from Togo, Togbi Agorkoli IV and other distinguished Chiefs.

Let me share with you a brief history on the relationships between Anlo and Asante as well as Anlo and Ga-Adangbe.
But first let me introduce you to the Appellation or slogan of each tribe;

It should be worth noting that the Anlo and Asante Kingdoms have never ever fought against each other either during pre-colonial or post colonial times.

The Anlo and Asante have rather been historically close allies with their relationship dating as far back as the mid 1750s in the 18th century to the 19th century under Asantehene Kwaku Duah, when the Asante, Akwamu and Anlo States formed a tripartite military alliance.

This tripartite alliance was later sealed after the death of Asantehene Kwaku Duah by his 25 year old nephew Asantehene Kofi Karikari, who subsequently presented a “Royal Sword” to Awadada Axorlu I, who was then the Military commander of the Anlo state.

History also has it that the Asantes and Anlo had done business extensively with Anlo supplying Asante with salt, slaves and even firearms and ammunition’s from the coast during the feud between the Asante and the British.

This alliance resulted in the establishment of Anloga as a town in Kumasi and also “Anloga Junction” in Kumasi.

It is a historical fact in all History books that the Ewe people are believed to have influenced the Adangbe.
And there’s also the story of how came the Ewe people are called “AYIGBE” by the GA people, and this story ties both the Ewe people of Anlo and the Ga-Adangbe people to their roots in Togo.
