THIS IS THE FAMOUS “SOGAKOPE BRIDGE”
(Longest Bridge in Ghana)
The Sogakope Bridge, also referred to as the “Lower Volta Bridge” is the longest bridge in Ghana and sits over the Volta River connecting the Sokpoe township to Sogakope on the major Accra to Aflao N1 highway. It is a 650 meter long bridge, and that’s twice the size of the “Adomi Bridge” which is about 334 meters long.
It is also the busiest and most economically important bridge in Ghana as it connects Ghana to Togo, as well as Benin and Nigeria. And we all know a lot of business goes on between Ghana-Togo-Nigeria more than any other countries in the West African region.
The Sogakope Bridge is one of the numerous projects embarked on by Dr Kwame Nkrumah and the construction was done between between January 1965 and January 1967 by two German contractors.
The Sogakope Bridge is also the venue for the famous “Tortsogbeza” which is an annual festival held every Easter by the people of Sogakope in conjunction with the neighboring to Sokpoe, and it involves a competition of diving off the bridge and swimming ashore.
The Bridge itself in Sogakope is also a business zone for the town folks where most commuters plying the Accra to Aflao road usually stop over to buy bread, snacks, the very famous “Adodoe” among others.
Do visit Sogakope and take a walk on the Longest bridge in Ghana and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Sogakope and Sokpoe people.
