WAR AND GALLANTRY: AKƆƲA (The Battle Of The Songor Lagoon: Sɔŋgɔʋiʋliʋa).

Aŋlɔs are noted for their gallantry, tact and diplomacy in warfare. The history of Aŋlɔs was characterized with numerous wars in which they came out victorious. The inborn tendency to resist oppression and bravery of Aŋlɔs was documented in both European and Ghanaian literary works.

One of those widely documented wars fought by the Aŋlɔs was the AKƆƲA of 1776.

The Songor salt lagoon was discovered by one AHIATƆVI ETSƐ from Agave-Agɔviegli clan. Trade with the Danes and military alliance with the Akwamus had made the Aŋlɔs so powerful that they attacked the Adãs in 1776.

It was a frightful encounter. Nearly one half of the Adã population was killed, half of the town was destroyed and several prisoners of war were taken away by the Aŋlɔs. The rest of Adãs fled to Okorhuem and Ningo.

The war dragged on until one OBRI KORAN of Akyem Abuakwa aided the Adãs and out of 36 Aŋlɔ communities, eight were attacked with less casualties: Aŋlɔgã, Woe, Tegbi, Atɔkɔ, Tsiame, Alakple, Atiavi, and Atito.
