Close down universities until UTAG impasse is resolved – Africa Education Watch
A pro-education group, Africa Education Watch, has urged Vice Chancellors of Ghana’s public universities to close down their institutions until the ongoing strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is called off.
The Group argued in a press release that it is unconscionable to keep freshmen who have not been matriculated in school for five weeks without any academic activity or direction.
It has been twenty-two (22) working days since UTAG members started their strike demanding enhanced conditions of service. The strike was declared on the 10th of January 2022.
The statement said majority of students on campus are freshmen who have not even been matriculated. These freshmen have had no academic direction since they arrived in their universities to meet a university community without academic activity or supervision by their lecturers and counsellors due to the strike.
The Africa Education Watch believes the continuous stay of the students on campus without academic activities has social and economic implications on both the students and their parents. They therefore called for the closure of the universities.
“In view of the increasing social and economic cost of staying on campus with no academic activity, the absence of academic direction for freshmen on campus, and the apparent lack of an imminent negotiated settlement of the impasse, it will be in the of student; freshmen especially and their families for the schools to be closed down”.
UTAG members have been on strike for five weeks, but there has been no significant progress in negotiating a settlement between the government and UTAG.
