THE EXODUS OF NYIKƆWU AND TORKOR ATORLIA(NYIKƆ CUSTOM)IN ANLO KINGDOM
The Night Drum of Anlo Kingdom known as Nyikorwu was introduced by Togbi Nditsi then Awaoamefia of the Anlo Kingdom into his administration. The drum is in two parts: Male and Female. The drum personifies the government or ruling of the people and helped to establish law, order and discipline within the kingdom.
Known in English as the "NIGHT DRUM" (MIDNIGHT DRUM), It is beaten at midnight, outside the home of someone heavily in debt or for an evildoers who is proved to be recalcitrant, refractory, or incorrigible. He or She is taken out forcibly and killed or buried alive at TƆKƆ ATƆLIA meaning "The Fifth Landing Stage."
The female drum is housed at NYIME in the Lashibi or Mia quarter at Aŋlɔga and the Male Drum is housed at AGƆWOWƆNU in the Aɖɔtri quarter. The Male drum sound first: "ZÃ MĨE DE, ZÃ MĨEGBƆ", We went at night and returned by night. The Female responds: "GBEWOE NYE GBENYE" implying "so let it be" or Amen.
So elders allege that Sril I Introduced the NYIKƆWU.
Throwback at the days of our grandparents; TORKOR ATORLIA
Torkor Atorlia known in English as Nyiko Custom is a custom performed at Anloga Avete.
In Torkor Atorlia, perpetrators of crimes are buried alive from their toes to their necks with their heads left for birds and other wild animals to prey on.
The operation is usually undertaken by warlords in the vicinity.
Parents were the key people who hand over their children to the warlords for the punishment.
The system was unique hence any child who tarnished the image of their family faced the consequences of their action.
"You will be buried alive. You will be buried up to your neck while you are alive so that crows will come and poke out your eyes when you are dead. That put a lot of fear in the youth so that
they don't misbehave.
