Ketu North To Get First Ever University Under Next Mahama Administration.
Ketu North Constituency in the Volta Region to be blessed with its first ever university in the next John Dramani Mahama administration.
The university, which will be known as University of Agriculture and Agribusiness (UAA); will be a transformation of the already existing Ohawu Agriculture College, which is located at Ohawu in the Ketu North Municipality.
The NDC, in their 2020 manifesto which is dubbed; “The Peoples’ Manifesto” promised to upgrade the famous Ohawu Agriculture College into a full degree-awarding public university if they win the upcoming December 7, 2020 general elections.
‘Page 40. 6.9.7. b’ of the manifesto is where the promise, which is a good news to the people of Ketu North and the Volta Region at large is captured.
Speaking to GhanaVanguard in an exclusive phone interview on Wednesday. September 23, 2020, the Volta Region Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr. Kafui Agbleze revealed that the purpose for the establishment of the new university that the NDC promised in their manifesto is to add value to the agriculture industry of the country.
“The purpose of the establishment of the agriculture university and agribusiness is mainly to ensure that a lot of value is added to our agriculture in the country,” he stated.
Mr. Agbleze further stated that the university will be a fully fledged one that will award academic certificates such as bachelors, masters and even doctoral degrees, all in agriculture related programs.
“Definitely it is going to be a fully fledged university that will concentrate on agric, just as we have UHAS that is focused on the health aspect, we have the University of Energy and Natural Resources focusing on energy and natural resources, so, this university will focusing on agriculture to be awarding agric related degrees, to the Masters and even the PhD levels,” he added.
Agbleze also claimed that Ghana, as a country is not robust in terms of adding value to its agricultural products and hence the need for the agriculture focused university so that researches conducted in the university will help in changing the narrative. This, according to Mr. Agbleze, will see an increase in agriculture revenue of the country.
“…and Ghana is not that robust in terms of value addition to its products. So when we have the agribusiness or the university located here, it implies that there will be transfer of technology, there will be a lot of research that will be done in the university in order to also make sure data is transfered to our farmers and we will earn a lot of revenue,” Mr. Agbleze was quoted as saying.
Already, Volta Region, which is a stronghold of the opposition NDC, has two public universities; University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the Ho Technical University (HTU) and a private university which is the E.P University College.
However, the number could increase to four if the John Mahama-led NDC emerges winner of the December 7, 2020 general elections which many believe will be keenly contested.
